Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of Physical Education, Sports, and Health (PJOK) teachers in developing students' discipline and physical abilities through self-defense training in elementary schools. The research approach used was descriptive qualitative, with a case study of one PJOK teacher and 20 fifth-grade students at SDN 69 Kendari. Data collection techniques included direct observation, semi-structured interviews, and training documentation. The results indicate that PJOK teachers play a central role in ensuring the success of self-defense learning through several strategies: thorough training planning tailored to students' abilities, intensive supervision and guidance, motivation through praise and rewards, consistent application of rules and discipline, and evaluation of students' physical skills and character. Implementation of these strategies can improve students' motor skills, coordination, self-confidence, sportsmanship, and social and emotional abilities. Self-defense training serves not only as physical stimulation but also as an effective medium for character learning, encouraging the internalization of the values of discipline, responsibility, cooperation, and respect for others. This study confirms that competent physical education (PJOK) teachers in pedagogical, psychological, and physical aspects are able to create a safe, enjoyable, and challenging learning environment, enabling students to experience holistic development. These findings provide empirical evidence that integrating sports and self-defense learning strategies can improve the quality of physical education while simultaneously developing positive character traits in elementary school students. Based on these results, it is recommended that self-defense training programs in elementary schools be structured and sustainable, supported by adequately competent PJOK teachers.
